Speaking Mobiles For Visually Impaired in Cyprus

08 November, 2006 by Peter Verhoeven

AN INNOVATIVE new scheme to enable blind or partially sighted individuals to use mobile phones was introduced by CyTA in a news conference yesterday.

The new service comes under the framework of CyTAs social programme entitled We all have the right to communication and has been in use for about two months. With this new speaking phone, people with visual disabilities will have easier access to communication and control their private life when it comes to their mobile phone.

According to the President of CyTA, Stavros Kremmos, communication should be easily accessible to everybody without discrimination. “We feel it is our duty to provide our customers with services which accommodate their needs,” he said. He went on to add that the project was just one of many measures that CyTA offers to the visually impaired.

The chairman of the Pancyprian Organisation for the Blind, Christakis Nicolaides, thanked CyTA for their assistance and co-operation and said people with visual disabilities could now use their mobile telephones independently without any restrictions, thanks to the Speaking Phone service. “CyTA have responded to our request in record time and in the best possible way by establishing this service for us free of charge.”

The Speaking Phone service is activated with the installation of the ‘TALKS’ account to the user’s mobile phone. This in turn allows the user to listen to all the information which appears on his mobile phone screen, with the use of ‘real voice’ technology. Benefits of this service include the fact that users can listen to incoming text messages (SMS), letters and words during the composition of a text message, time and date, battery status as well as the name or number of the caller. The ‘TALKS’ account is only available to Cytamobile-Vodafone, pay monthly and soeasy pay as you go customers who can provide a certificate from the Pancyprian Organisation of the Blind. The service is only available through CyTA shops and can only be installed on mobile phones Symbian Series 60 (more information on the exact models can be found on www.nuance.com/talks).

Anyone requiring additional information on the new service can visit Cytamobile-Vodafone’s website www.cytamobilevodafone.com or call CyTA’s Call Centre on 132.
